Congregation Tifereth Israel’s 125th Anniversary
OUR HISTORY OF RESILIENCE
INSPIRES OUR FUTURE
CTI, the oldest continuously operating synagogue on Long Island, celebrates its 125th anniversary in 2022. It has been a remarkable 125-year journey infused with the resilience of our dedicated families, who have sustained membership over multiple generations.
On June 12, 2022, we mark this significant milestone with a cocktail party followed by a 60-minute video, chronicling our notable history and featuring interviews with individuals from multi-generational families, who regale us with heart-warming CTI memories.
A musical interlude recounts the history of our success: We begin with our fledgling congregation in members’ homes in 1880, moving on to our establishment as a center for Glen Cove’s Jewish community in 1887.
Congregation Tifereth Israel has been an active center for Jewish life in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, culminating in our current state as a robust congregation — more than 300 families — that continues to grow from generation to generation.
Our celebration honors the Shapiro family — members Libby, Len and Caryl, Ben and Michelle, and Eve. We honor the memory of Joe Shapiro and recognize the contributions of the Shorenstein, Shapiro and Posner families who settled here in the 1900’s and helped build our community. They served as officers, advisers and benefactors, inspiring others with their loyalty and dedication.
This family, which has maintained active CTI membership over five generations, supporting us with their presence and generosity, embodies CTI’s story, with the ability to be flexible, adapt to the times and continue to move into the next century.
