Congregation Tifereth Israel’s Religious School combines the teaching of traditional
Jewish learning and values with a spirit and love for our heritage that will follow our
students throughout their lives. The school is large enough to offer our students a richness
of materials and experience, yet small class sizes afford each student plenty of individual
attention.
|
Classroom material on such topics as lighting Shabbat candles, and keeping Shabbat and
the holidays, is supplemented by combined classes celebrating our major holidays that
feature activities appropriate to the students’ age levels. Regularly scheduled assemblies
cover reading drill, various kinds of prayer, and study of the weekly Torah portion. Within
the framework of each grade level are specific goals that we work to achieve. These goals are
the building blocks for not only graduation from our program--Kindergarten to the
Confirmation--but also serve the equally if not more important function of equipping our
students with the tools they will need to live a Jewish life when out on their own.
Topics include:
Hebrew Reading
Equips our students with the skills required to sight-read and pronounce Hebrew with
emphasis on prayers and services.
Prayer
Students develop proficiency in prayer for various occasions of Jewish life, religious services,
and daily practices.
Shabbat, Holidays and Festivals
Our children learn about Shabbat and festivals, including their customs, laws, and methods
of celebration.
Calendar
Students learn the Hebrew calendar--how if differs from the Gregorian calendar, the dates
of various key events (holidays and other events such as mourning).
Scripture (Tanakh)
Includes familiarity with the structure and contents of the Jewish Scripture including Torah,
Scripture, Commentary and discussion (Talmud, Midrash and Mishna).
Laws and Customs
Students will develop familiarity with the various laws and customs and their evolution
through the centuries. This includes concepts of Tzedakah (charity), conduct towards
strangers, and carrying out Mitzvot (Commandments).
Jewish History
The history of the Jewish People from biblical times to the present is explored.
Israel
A study of modern Israel including history, settlement, roots of the current and past
conflicts, current concerns, and discuss the future of the Jewish Homeland.
Ethics
Students study cases drawn from the headlines. These are realistic problems that are
submitted to the test of Jewish law in order to find the "right solution." The students
discuss values, ethics, and take a look into the codes and wisdom of the Jewish legal
process.
