New Women'S Group Program

CTI'S newly formed women's group will officially kick off the new year Sunday at 10:00am with the showing of a thought provoking documentary produced by film maker Francine Zuckerman.

"Half the Kingdom" highlights a woman's struggles within Orthodoxy as she attempts to combine Jewish tradition with feminist principles.

This is a movie that Patte and I were privileged to preview with the director when the movie was first released in Canada.

There will be a light breakfast served. A discussion will also follow regarding the women's group plans for the year.

111th Birthday Bash

Don't forget to reserve your tickets for CTI's 111th Anniversary Birthday Bash.

Our organizing committee has been working tirelessly on this event to be held next Saturday night. The bash will include a live band, a great meal, a magician, and raffles.

Please call or e-mail the office to reserve your tickets.

It is my general observation that as people get older, we tend to dance less. Let's all let our hair down next weekend for a great cause.

Tickets are $60 per person.

Comfort Group

It is a fact of life that providing comfort during times of sadness is an important part of what we do at CTI.

During the past year, there have been numerous deaths, both within our congregation and in other communities, that have affected our synagogue family.

Although many congregants are so very gracious in comforting those who suffer loss, I would like to discuss providing this "community of comfort" on a more formal basis.

We want to ensure that, in accordance with Jewish tradition, anyone who has suffered a loss does not have to worry about meals or organizing the Shiva.

Please e-mail me if you are interested in being part of this CTI Loss Comfort Group.

Classic Israeli Comedy

If you like a good Israeli comedy, then you won't want to miss CTI's movie of the month, "2 Kuni Lemel", that will be shown this Wednesday at 7:30pm as CTI's Movie of the Month.

The movie is a 1966 Israeli classic which tells the story Kuni Lemel who is recruited by the local matchmaker to find a suitable husband for his boss' daughter while also trying to find a spouse for his own daughter.

The comedy is rated A+ by Yahoo Movies.

Please don't forget next weekend's seniors' bat mitzvah as we call to the Torah five residents of The Regency of the Glen Cove. Speaking of the Regency, the Glen Cove assisted living complex is currently gathering goods as part of its annual "Stuff a Bus" campaign, collecting non-perishable food for local pantries. You can drop off your donations at the Regency any time before Friday, November 21.

USY Convention

Calling all high school juniors.

CTI is looking to send a few young people to next month's United Synagogue Youth conference in Washington, D.C.

We'd like to see some of our youth, particularly high school juniors, link up with this national Jewish movement. There are great programs planned for the hundreds who will convene from throughout the United States and Canada.

We are also hopeful that these young people will be able to serve as advisors with a Kadima youth group that we are planning to form at CTI.

The trip to Washington will be partially subsidized. Please contact Cantor Gustavo or me if you are interested.

Judaism's First Couple

This is the week in our Torah cycle where we read about the actual birth of Judaism.

God taps Abraham on the shoulder and chooses him, and ultimately Sarah, to become the Jewish couple with the mission of parented the entire Jewish nation.

Why were Abraham and Sarah chosen? What were the circumstances? And if God is so powerful, why does God need the help of the Jewish people and humanity? Does being "chosen" mean we are better than everyone else?

I will be discussing the Jewish partnership with God and humanity in my Saturday sermon. Tonight, I will be speaking about what some consider to be the most important line in the Torah. It's tucked away in the first sentences, and most people don't usually notice it. But this sentence can be powerful as we strive to make our lives a blessing.

Come find out tonight what that line is at our weekly Musical Kabbalat Shabbat at 8:00pm. Please feel free to bring your own musical instruments and join in. The service continues to grow week to week.

Shabbat shalom v'kol tuv (with all goodness,)
